Experienced Data Manager – Oracle/SQL with focus areas: chemistry & biology research data

We are looking for a proactive and meticulous Data Manager, whom we will entrust with the mission to ensure data quality, completeness, and accessibility. Such data include compound inventory, and electronic laboratory notebooks recording chemical, biological or pharmacological data. As an independent and proactive data professional, the Data Manager will play a pivotal role in shaping and driving the company’s long-term data strategy.

Key responsibilities of the Data Manager are :

Data quality & maintenance

• Manage the company LIMS system (Dotmatics platform).
• Ensure data accessibility and correctness, performing daily data entries and regular follow-ups.
• Maintain the digital compound inventory together with scientists and the compound manager.

Data analysis & reporting

• Create protocols for data analysis with internal and external study groups.
• Generate reports for chemists and biologists.
• Write data transformation pipelines with KNIME or Python.
• Use SQL for queries, views, transformations and corrections.

Collaboration & support

• Support and work closely with internal scientific team.
• Act as the main contact for database-related requests (internal & external stakeholders).
• Work with the Dotmatics support team for technical issues.
• Facilitate proper data transfer between internal teams and external collaborators.

System development & improvement

• Test, develop and redesign the current database management system to ensure reliability and performance.
• Monitor database usage, provide recommendations and implement solutions to improve efficacy, accuracy and user experience.
• Design and define future data management policies to support the company’s long-term data strategy and compliance needs.
• Propose, develop and deploy new tools for data analysis, export, and visualization to improve scientific workflows.
• Help optimize electronic lab notebooks (ELN) for chemists and biologists.

Required skills :

• Databases: Oracle, SQL, HTML/javascript
• Data pipelines: KNIME, Python
• Systems: LIMS (laboratory Information Management Systems) and ELN (Electonic Lab Notebooks), experience with Dotmatics or comparable ecosystems
• Domain knowledge: chemistry & biology data handling
• Problem-solving mindset for data accessibility and data quality challenges
• Proactive communicator, comfortable working with scientists and IT teams
• Capable of coordinating between internal and external stakeholders
• Proficiency in English (Dutch or French are an asset but not compulsory)

Who you are :     

• You hold a Master in Data Science, Master in  Bioinformatics,  Master in Biomedical Sciences with the data management specialization, Master in Computer Science or computational sciences with insight in life sciences, Master chemistry with a focus on informatics, or have equivalent experience.

• You have preferably minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role.
