Laboratory Assistant - BioImaging Core Ghent

The VIB Technologies program is the institute's research infrastructure, offering access to cutting-edge technologies. It comprises 14 core facilities, each with specific technology expertise present at the different VIB locations. These facilities support VIB's 1700 researchers with over 120 staff members.
The VIB Bioimaging Core in Ghent is seeking a Technical Support Team Member to contribute to the smooth operation of its microscopy services. The VIB Bioimaging Core provides access, support, consultancy, and training in light and electron microscopy, as well as image processing and analysis. A dedicated team of microscopists supports the Ghent-based VIB research community, working closely with our sister facility in Leuven.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated colleague with a keen interest in microscopy, who is eager to contribute to the essential tasks that keep the Core running efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Support general lab organization, including:
- Managing stocks of antibodies, plasmids, staining products and lab supplies
- Placing orders for the Core
- Coordinating instrument maintenance
- Ensuring a well-organized and tidy lab environment
- Performing maintenance and quality control of widefield and confocal light microscopes
- Providing training and support on widefield light microscopes and basic image processing
- Assisting with sample preparation and testing of new reagents
- Maintaining cell lines and preparing cell-based experiments
- Organizing and documenting weekly staff meetings
- Updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and laboratory documentation
Profile
- Desired qualification: Professional Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical or Biological Sciences, or equivalent
- Willingness to perform a variety of laboratory and administrative tasks
- Interested in science and technology with a preference for support roles over independent research
- Strong team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Well-organized, detailed-oriented and capable of working independently.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Good knowledge of Excel, Word and Powerpoint
- Good command of spoken and written English
- Patient, resilient, and eager to learn new techniques and take on responsibilities
- Assets (not required but advantageous):
- Laboratory work experience
- (Microscopy) core facility work experience
- Interest/expertise in cell culture, basic light microscopy, basic electron microscopy and/or basic image processing
