Laboratory Technician - Full-time or Part-time (negotiable)
The Rademakers lab at the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology is dedicated to uncovering the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and related neurodegenerative disorders. Our research spans gene discovery, functional genomics, and translational applications, with a particular emphasis on complex genetic mutations such as repeat expansions. We employ cutting-edge technologies including long-read sequencing, single-nuclei multi-omics, and iPSC-derived models to advance our understanding of disease biology and identify novel biomarkers. The lab fosters a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, bringing together expertise from human genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and clinical neuroscience.
Position
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented lab technician to support our genetic studies. The successful candidate will be responsible for the genetic characterization of our continuously expanding collection of biosamples from neurodegenerative disease patients and healthy controls and will assist with the development and execution of custom genetic assays aimed at novel gene discovery. Routinely used techniques will include nucleic acid extractions, Sanger sequencing, PCR assay optimization and RT-qPCR. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with a dynamic team of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, contributing to impactful projects at the forefront of neurogenetics.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory experiments, including the handling and processing of biological samples, genetic mutation screening, and a range of molecular biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, RT-qPCR, and sequencing.
- Assist in the planning, setup and organization of the laboratory, including procurement and maintenance of equipment and consumables.
- Maintain detailed and accurate lab records, protocols, and data in compliance with established standards and regulations of a biobank environment.
- Adhere to all laboratory safety guidelines.
Requirements
- A professional Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Laboratory technology, Genetics, Molecular biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Neuroscience, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated proficiency in laboratory techniques relevant to human genetics.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with an ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Attention to detail, willingness to learn, and a proactive approach to problem-solving skills.
What We Offer
- An open-ended contract. This position is available as either full-time or part-time. We welcome applications from candidates interested in both options.
- Hospitalization insurance and pension plan
- Full reimbursement if you come to the lab by public transport or bike allowance if you come by bike
- Internet fee
- Closing week between Christmas and New Year
- Professional development through regular mentorship, training opportunities, and collaborative projects.
- The opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research in an inspiring, supportive and international environment with access to cutting-edge technologies and techniques in neurogenetics
